Being real isn't easy- it takes grit. It's not just talking but doing, holding up to your words when times get bumpy. It's telling your friends the hard stuff and not just the fluff- we don't need anymore cotton candy BFFs that are only around when the going is easy. And we certainly don't need to be the ones who bail hard at the first sign of trouble. When I'm saying be real, I mean really real. It's easy to inflate your ego when stuff is going good, it's easy to be kind when things are going your way. But what about those tired dogged days where life crawls and your body aches, what then of kindness and patience? If we build ourselves up on our egos, we will get blown over on our tough days. So be real in a a commercialized world, in a world of Photoshop and live editing, be real as hard and fast as you can. It's easy to get swept up in the glamour and unreality of the American marketing machine - soften, know yourself to be good enough as a work in progress.
How can you be real with yourself? Simply by taking a spoonful of mindfulness on a daily basis- start a meditation practice. When you begin a meditation practice, it can be rough, silence can be deafening when you are so used to the noise of your thoughts. But in the struggle of silence you will find your answers - give yourself the gift of stillness daily and watch the bullshit fall away. You'll know real fast what shit you don't need when you sit with yourself in silence half an hour a day. There is so toxicity built into this world and in order to make it through muck, we have to be real and raw and not hide from our truths. Be real so you can weather the storm, give yourself permission to be raw. Want to affect change? Start at home- be soul food not eye candy.
